Birth doulas make some of the best birth photographers.
As I continue to learn more and more about birth photography, I have been interacting with some of the most awesome birth photographers. There is one thing that I have noticed while learning about these awesome photographers, and that is that they are usually also birth doulas. I think there are many reasons for this, and the primary one is that we love to support people in the birth space. So, this naturally includes birth doula and birth photography work. Many birth doulas and photographers also have an interest and thirst for knowledge regarding anything birth. This can include knowing how to create the best environment for a physiologic birth, learning the tell-tale signs of different stages of labor depending on how the birthing person is responding, and so much more. Another important reason that many birth photographers are also doulas is because we understand the power and importance of birth stories. When supporting pregnant clients, we know that birth stories can be such a source of encouragement when preparing for their own labors and births. Then, when sharing birth stories, especially through photography, this creates awareness about the process of birth and the transformative power it can hold.
There is such an advantage to hiring a birth photographer that is also a doula, and this mainly lies in the fact that we understand the process of birth. This means that we won’t walk into your birthing space and disturb the peace. We won’t ask your care provider how much longer before they think the baby will be born. We will be discreet and unobtrusive when capturing images of your birth. We understand the beauty of the labor and birth process, and that is why we want to capture it to be preserved forever in images. So, that means we also know how important it is not to create any disturbances during the process.
I have really enjoyed the process of learning about birth photography and capturing these images for clients. I get so excited to come home after a birth (even if the baby was born in the middle of the night), and get right to work on editing the images. This is because I am so invested in your birth experience. From the moment that you hire me to the moment that I deliver your images, I am excited to learn about you and your values, capture images that portray your story, and then pass them along to remember the experience.
