Doula support is so vital even when you plan to get an epidural

There are many that plan beforehand to get an epidural during labor and birth, and there are many that get an epidural during the labor process even if that wasn’t what they were planning. An epidural is a tool that can be used during labor for a variety of reasons. Some laboring mamas want an epidural in anticipation of potentially needing stitches due to a tear. Others have had a long and exhausting labor, and an epidural will allow them to rest and recharge. Regardless of the reason, many can wonder how a doula could support them after they get an epidural. Read below to see why doula support is still so important!

It can be easy to assume that once you have an epidural, you have to lay on the bed in one position until baby is born. However, there are still many positions that you can use during labor with an epidural to support an efficient laboring process for you and baby. For example, if you have an epidural and you know that baby has not yet descended into the pelvis, a doula can help you get into the “flying cowgirl” position to help encourage baby to engage in the pelvis. When you have an epidural, it is also not a requirement that you push on your back. A doula can help you get into a side-lying position, a squatting position while using the squat bar, or a supported hands and knees position.

Outside of physical support, a doula is so helpful for emotional support as well. Your mindset during labor is so important, and a doula can help protect your peace during the process. A doula can help to affirm you through statements that encourage confidence in your ability to make decisions and labor well. A doula will also be there throughout the process to ensure that your rights are respected and your preferences honored. There are so many moving parts during the labor process, so it is helpful to have someone there that is familiar with labor and birth to help you navigate the journey.
